Hanoi – Hanoi's newly launched intelligent traffic control center detected nearly 400 traffic violations in the first three days of operation, the majority of which were running red lights, city police announced.
According to the Hanoi Traffic Police Department, from December 13 to December 16, the artificial intelligence camera system identified 393 violations of traffic safety regulations, of which 125 were related to cars and 268 were related to motorcycles.
Red light violations made up the bulk of the tally, with 352 violations recorded, including 87 for cars and 265 for motorcycles. Other violations included five incidents of motor vehicles failing to comply with road signs, one incident of driving against the flow on a one-way street, three incidents of motorbikes carrying more passengers than permitted, 21 incidents of motor vehicles stopping in prohibited areas, and 11 incidents of vehicles picking up or dropping off passengers in areas where stopping or parking is prohibited.
The violations were detected through a network of AI-powered cameras operated centrally at the city's Intelligent Traffic Control Center. The system allows traffic police to monitor traffic in real time, identify violations, detect congestion, and respond to accidents and other incidents to support traffic management and diversions.
Early statistics show that the number of violations recorded during this period was higher than during traditional field patrols and compared to the period before the system was officially operational. The images extracted from the cameras clearly show the license plate, time stamp, and specific violation, and serve as the legal basis for issuing fines under Vietnam's so-called “cold fines” system, where fines are imposed after a violation is recorded.
Hanoi Police officially launched the system on December 13, deploying more than 1,830 AI-enabled cameras at 195 major intersections across the capital.
Police say the camera records 360-degree footage, can identify vehicles and license plates from a distance of 500 to 700 meters, and can operate continuously day and night under various weather conditions. The system is able to detect and record administrative traffic violations in more than 23 categories.
The data collected by the AI cameras will be stored on multiple servers for up to 75 days, authorities said.
