NYK, MTI and Grid Co. have jointly developed an AI-based system that automates and optimizes automotive carrier allocation plans.
The full-scale operation of the system was released in NYK in July.
NYK operates more than 100 auto carriers, the world's largest fleet. Historically, ship allocation planning has been a very complex and labor-intensive process that requires a comprehensive assessment of numerous conditions for hundreds of voyages a few months ago.
To overcome these problems, NYK sought to develop a system designed to increase planning accuracy and efficiency by organizing and building up the data and decision-making factors involved in delivery and scheduling.
The system uses AI to generate the best plans within about 10 minutes of evaluating millions of potential shipping schedules a few months into the future. The system analyzes many factors, including customer requirements, fleet operational status and repair schedules, port congestion risk, port congestion risk to optimize KPIs such as vessel utilization, transportation efficiency, and transportation costs.
Additionally, by integrating the effective use of next-generation fuel vessels and carbon pricing considerations, the system is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
