The rise of agent AI: How trust is the key to human collaboration?a new report from the Capgemini Research Institute examines the emergence of AI agents as a business transformational force. Based on insights from a survey of 1,500 senior executives from 14 countries, the report examines adoption trends, economic impacts, trust dynamics, and organizational changes needed to effectively expand agent AI.

The key findings from the report are as follows:

  • $450 billion opportunity: By 2028, AI agents were able to generate economic value of up to $450 billion through revenue growth and cost reductions across the markets studied.
  • Adoptions are accelerating, but maturity remains low. 2% of organizations deploy AI agents on a large scale, 12% deploy on a partial scale, while 23% launch pilots and 61% survey their deployment. 15% of business processes are expected to reach half- or full autonomy over the next 12 months. However, less than one in five organizations reports high maturity in terms of the data and technology infrastructure required to implement Agent AI.
  • Trust in fully autonomous AI agents is decliningit will fall from 43% to 27% in a year. Ethical concerns, lack of transparency, and limited understanding of agent capabilities are key barriers.
  • Human-AI collaboration is the future: By 2028, 38% of organizations will acquire AI agents as team members within the human team. Blend teams (with human and AI agents working together) become the norm, driving productivity and innovation.
