- Music with AI-generated elements is eligible for a Grammy Award, the CEO of the Recording Academy said.
- Although this award is only awarded to “human creators”, these artists are able to leverage AI in their work.
- A new rule last month banned works that “do not contain human copyrighted material.”
To win a Grammy, you need a great song, great delivery, and a pulse.
The Recording Academy announced new rules last month, stating that the music industry’s highest award will go “only to human creators,” and flatly rejecting works that “do not contain human copyright.”
But that doesn’t mean humans can’t create award-worthy singles and albums using AI, as long as humans are careful to credit their contributions, says Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in an interview with the Associated Press. .
“Music containing AI-generated elements is absolutely eligible and considered for Grammy nominations, during the period,” Mason said. “What doesn’t happen is we don’t give the AI part a Grammy or a Grammy nomination.”
Like most awards, the Grammy Awards recognize a wide range of creative contributions, including lyric writing, composition, production, and performance, to create great music within and across genres.
In other words, if a singer performs lyrics written by an AI, it will not be considered songwriting. Humans may be credited as producers when AI performs.
“As long as humans contribute more than the bare minimum, it means a lot to us and they will always be considered for nominations and awards,” Mason said. “We do not want technology to replace human creativity. .”
The news comes on the heels of guidance from a consortium of 24 leading UK universities, including the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, to allow students and staff to use generative AI in their studies, as long as it is used ethically. it was done.
Mason said it took about six months to finalize the process of determining the rules for the award cycle, and he expected more than a few submissions to include AI elements.
“We’ll see if some of them get nominated, but I’m sure some will submit,” he said.
