A study suggests smartwatches could detect symptoms of Parkinson’s disease seven years before they become noticeable.
The study, conducted between 2013 and 2016, compared and analyzed data from people who had the condition and who were diagnosed with it within up to seven years of smartwatch data collection.
More than 103,000 people participated in the study, wearing medical-grade wearables for seven days to measure continuous locomotion speed. Slow movements, tremors and stiffness are common symptoms observed in the conditions analyzed in the study.

The researchers were able to distinguish between those who developed Parkinson’s disease and those who remained healthy.
They demonstrated that AI could be used to identify individuals in the general population who would develop the condition later in life, and even predict when the condition would occur.
According to the British Parkinson’s Disease Association, approximately 145,000 people have Parkinson’s disease, with 18,000 new diagnoses each year.
