Today, many people are worried that artificial intelligence (AI) is coming for work. If you're one of them, a recent study by Microsoft sheds some light on how AI generation capabilities affect your field of work. In short, some occupations are more susceptible to it than others.
Unlike previous studies, this study is causing waves as it draws insights from real data. Microsoft saw conversations between 200,000 anonymous co-pilots from 2024 and mapped them against the US government's employment classification system.
The study identified the entire occupational group, such as “Computer and Mathematics Occupations” and “Office and Management Support,” among those with the highest overlap in AI. The results reveal exactly what carriers AI is already touching on and whether it has had a large impact.

As a result of this study, the “AI Application Score” was calculated. Measures how closely a particular job activity matches AI capabilities. To everyone's surprise, knowledgeable, communication-rich roles were at the top of the list of jobs that were most affected. At the bottom of this list are jobs that require physical labor or machinery operations, showing minimal overlap.
This score does not guarantee employment losses, but reflects overlap. Researchers emphasized that there are no occupations that are fully performed by AI. This study focuses solely on language-based generation AI (e.g., co-pilot) rather than other AI areas such as robotics and autonomous systems that may affect different roles.

Researchers emphasized that it is important to distinguish between overlap and substitution. Overlap means that AI performs certain tasks with humans, but exchange means that it takes their place. This study does not predict employment growth or losses. This is just a snapshot of where AI is today. In fact, historical trends suggest that automation can sometimes add jobs rather than take away. So it's not all darkness and destiny, even in sectors where everything is overlapping.

What does this mean to you?
If your job appears on the “most affected” list, it doesn't mean you'll need to panic or start packing your desk. This means that AI can already handle some of the daily tasks. And it could be an opportunity if you learn to use it. Those who embrace AI tools can work faster, free time for creative thinking, and increase value even more.
If your role is on the “most unaffected” list, don't assume you are immunized forever. Physical and practical jobs today have little overlap with AI, but future technologies that go beyond language models such as robots and AI-driven machines could change the picture. Staying adaptable, learning basic AI skills and keeping up with technology trends can help you stay ahead of the industry.
In short, this study treats it as a career weather forecast rather than a prediction of the end of the year. AI is not going to replace you, but anyone who knows how to work with AI can. The smartest move? Learn to become that person.

For now, there appears to be no predictions for mass unemployment due to an increase in AI. However, this study highlights the potential for the affected areas to evolve.
