MIHS seminar introduces the use of AI in dentistry

Rawalpindi: Data science expert Umayma Khurshid Ahmad highlighted key areas in dentistry where the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has greatly helped oral health professionals and helped improve people’s lives.

She was a guest speaker at a seminar on AI and machine learning in dentistry organized by the Margara Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS).

Umaima is currently working as a Machine Learning Engineer at DAT Freight and Analytics in Chicago, USA. She recently completed her Master of Science in Data Her Science with honors. She has also worked as a software engineer and has developed valuable platforms that have impacted digitalization around the world, especially in medical technology.

Prof. Amjad Mahmoud, Principal and Dean of Margara School of Dentistry (MDC), Dr. Shakir Khan, Deputy Principal Professor, Dr. Nazim Farouk, Dean, Professor, Islamabad University of Physiotherapy, Dr. Sohail Ahmad, Dean, Professor, Margara College of Pharmacy and other senior faculty members also attended. .

Umayma explained that AI includes the ability of machines to perform tasks that traditionally required human intelligence.

He said the concept of AI dates back to 1950, but it is only in the last two decades that advances in big data, computational power and AI algorithms have made it a valuable tool. These advances have led to the development of various AI applications aimed at improving people’s lives.

During the presentation, the speakers highlighted the adoption of AI in various fields of dentistry such as dental surgery, periodontology, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthetics.

Applications of AI in dentistry can be divided into four categories: diagnosis, decision-making, treatment planning, and treatment outcome prediction. Among them, diagnosis and treatment planning are particularly popular.

The audience gained insight into various AI applications such as predictive analytics, virtual consultations, remote dentistry, and platforms such as ‘Overjet’. Towards the end of the session, participants had the opportunity to answer their own questions.

To express his gratitude, Professor Amjad Mahmoud presented the esteemed guest speaker with a plaque as a token of appreciation.
