One of my professors recently asked me What I thought about Chat GPT is specifically an AI generator that students can use to complete assignments (without actually completing them).
I told him it sounded creepy and didn’t seem like something students should use.

I consider myself a prolific writer, but given the amount of original content I create each week, both at work and at school (and the effort I put into creating that content), the quality of this AI generator is I wondered what was going on. Do all the writing samples sound the same? Can it mimic the way I write? Is the content good?
So i tried it.

Well, the article Chat GPT gave me was 640 words, not 1,000. But I was able to get a general overview of the word “theology” in a style similar to mine. The content is fine, but not on par with what actual theologians would write. If my theology professor rated this, I’d say it’s pretty low.

I appreciate the generator’s attention to my tendency to list the three attributes of something, separate them with commas, and use them to emphasize a point at the end of a sentence (although following BNG’s style, Oxford’s I didn’t omit the comma, which is why). not shown here). I also recognized my love of rhetorical questions and a few other notable aspects of my writing. This sounds like something I could have written.
But no source.
When I asked the generator to rewrite the article with hyperlinks to the source, this was not possible. A scholarly citation was generated, but incomplete. “McGrath, Alister E. Christian Theology: An Introduction. Wiley Blackwell.
Although this is a real book, it’s worth noting that students and professors have noticed that AI generators sometimes generate fake references. Also, throughout the article, there was no indication as to where exactly the source was used or from which chapter, section, or page number the information was supposed to come.
Therefore, we do not recommend using Chat GPT or other AI generators to create assignments for students trying to avoid plagiarism.
It’s great that the AI generator can get used to my work and produce the work so quickly, but it sounds a bit like me with just one basic question and no other additional information. It’s creepy.

For students, this means writing assignments is much easier (and contributing significantly less to learning). For professional writers and editors, not just professors, this means that content that isn’t actually original work may end up in your submission box.
Writing should be a fruitful endeavor. It’s one of the ways we interact, make connections, ask questions, and learn. Sure, students can edit and critique a paper written by an AI generator before submitting it, but they lose half the learning experience.
Real text (written by humans) is introspective. It provides writers with an opportunity to discuss values, wrestle with difficult content, and form passionate debates. AI generators can imitate the author’s style, but I’m not convinced that they can imitate the author’s purpose.
I think the next time I write an article, I’ll stick to old-school Word documents and old-school brains.
