AI startups need testers and trainers. At this company, the work is rated X.
Joi A.I. AI companion startup The company claims to offer “relationships with AI that are emotionally, intellectually, and intimately satisfying.” We are recruiting 10 “masturbation consultants”. The position lasts four weeks and requires participants aged 18 and older to write about an intimate experience testing out the company’s NSFW audio capabilities.
When Joi AI posted the job opening on social media, Julie Levin, the Cyprus-based company’s head of brand, expected some kind of response online. She didn’t expect to receive thousands of applications and flood her inbox.
Levin told Business Insider that the company has received more than 100,000 applications in the past few days.
“What do we do with 100,000 applications?” Levin asked. “Maybe we should call them ‘winners’ because this is such a big competition.”

Yes, this position is genuine, the company said. Joi AI said it will conduct the study with the support of human resources and is seeking applicants of different ages, genders and sexualities. Participants will be required to complete “daily audio-guided sessions” and write “short weekly reports.”
Joi AI, rebranded from Eva AI in 2025, operates on the Coinbase pricing model on the web. (Earn 1,000 coins for your first month of $13.99.) Eva AI has raised an estimated $4 million since its founding in 2023, according to PitchBook.
Levin declined to reveal the company’s investors, revenue or specific number of users, but said 70 employees are working on the product and it has millions of monthly users.

Levin plans to ask consultants questions about their health as well as products, such as: “Was any process interrupted or inconvenienced?”
Sexy AI is in a state of transition. Elon Musk’s xAI is the only major AI lab to enter the market, releasing a “Spicy Mode” feature that allows for more adult-only interactions with AI companions wearing lingerie. OpenAI at one point announced that it would expand its permissions for “erotica,” but reportedly backtracked.
To apply for a Joi AI gig, applicants must fill out a basic questionnaire. I have one interesting question. “What do you want to learn about yourself?”
“We hope that people will learn something about how masturbation affects their lives, both good and bad,” Levin said. “We wanted them to reflect on that.”
Joi AI has put out a call for people to post screenshots of their application online. Several users responded with answers to that particular question.
“I want to be a part of history too,” one commenter wrote. Another person wrote that they expected to “make money with their hidden habits.”
Levine’s email is shared publicly, and interested candidates send resumes directly to her. The majority of applicants are men in their 20s to 30s.
For now, she’s enjoying the reaction online.
“I think this is the hottest job posting right now,” Levin said. “I was hoping it would be somewhere like OpenAI or Google, but it’s not.”
