Thomas Massey says he lost Republican primary due to AI slowdown and baby boomer voters

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) lost last week’s primary to Trump supporter Ed Galine. He attributed the loss in part to “baby boomers” who were fooled by the AI-generated video and the $25 million MAGA campaign against him.

Massey told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday that opponents have spent “at least $20 million, probably $25 million, against me.” “And what they did was expand the voter base, and there were a lot of voters who were misinformed and uninformed.

“In fact, my daughter, who lives outside of my congressional district, heard someone at the polling place next door trying to find my opponent’s name on the ballot. He didn’t even know I wasn’t his representative. That’s how much they fooled the people of Kentucky here.”

He added that AI-generated video was used to show Massey doing things like “checking into a hotel room with AOC and Ilhan Omar and holding hands with them.”

“It actually worked very well for boomers,” Massey added. “But here’s the thing, Kristen. That’s only going to work for a little while. The baby boomers, you know, are going to leave this country to Gen X, Gen Z, Gen Y, and Millennials. And those are the people I won overwhelmingly.”

“That makes me really hopeful for this country. They don’t get fooled by artificial intelligence, they check the news. They get their news sources from podcasts and other sources. I mean, they’re fooling my voters, they’re turning out ignorant voters. We won this election by broadening our base. But look, despite this tremendous headwind, I got 45% of the vote. That means 45% of the party still believes in the ideals that I believe in and have supported.”

Massey, who has served in Congress since being elected in 2012, has been a vocal critic of the Iran war and voted against President Trump’s tax bill in 2025. The race between Massie and Garlein was the most expensive U.S. House race in history, according to the Associated Press.
