SAN DIEGO — Research shows that artificial intelligence systems helped improve follow-up rates for diabetic retinopathy treatment in Rwanda.

“What we are trying to do is give people who need AI the most access to it for diagnostic or training purposes,” Cherwek said. “We are here to bridge the digital-data divide and leverage our partnership with Cybersight to improve patient diagnosis.”

In Orbis’ first randomized controlled trial, known as RAIDERS, researchers enrolled 827 participants from four diabetes clinics in Rwanda. , increased DR care follow-up rates by more than 30%.

Additionally, patient satisfaction is over 99%, and more than two-thirds of patients preferred AI over human grading because of the immediate results. Compared to human graders, the AI ​​had a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 85% in detecting referable DR.

Cherwek said Orbis is partnering with Rwanda’s Minister of Health to roll out the program nationwide. Also in Vietnam, he is working to introduce nationwide screening by an AI platform.

“It’s really impressive how much doctors are enjoying non-black-box algorithms,” said Cherwek. “Human consultations are actually decreasing thanks to Cybersight machine guidance.”
