AMRITSAR: An AI-generated video allegedly depicting a blasphemous scene at the Golden Temple has sparked widespread anger among Sikhs even as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has ordered a formal probe. The controversial video shows a turban-wearing skeleton walking along the shrine’s sacred parikrama, but surprisingly with his shoes on, a clear violation of the mariada (Sikh religious code of conduct). The visual also depicts a person entering a langar hall wearing footwear and consuming food, further reinforcing the impression of contempt for Sikh tradition and mariada. When the video went viral on social media, it drew harsh criticism from various quarters. SGPC Chairman Harjinder Singh Dhami while expressing deep concern over the growing trend of using technology to produce videos that demean the sanctity of the Golden Temple and hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs, directed action against the accounts and those responsible. He said the misuse of artificial intelligence had deeply hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs. He urged the authorities to take strict action against the culprits to ensure that no one commits such acts. The SGPC president also appealed to the Sikh community not to share videos that hurt religious sentiments. Recently, another AI-generated clip showed a young man entering a parikrama in a car.
