Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has launched the Agricultural Artificial Intelligence Institute (IAAI), a new research and development hub aimed at applying AI to global food security challenges. The announcement, shared by the university on LinkedIn, signals a shift to field-ready AI systems aimed at supporting smallholder farmers at scale, especially in areas vulnerable to climate change.

Digital advisory hub for agriculture

IAAI was established in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs of the UAE Presidential Court and the Gates Foundation. The institute is positioned as a digital advisory hub focused on improving the lives of more than 43 million smallholder farmers through AI-powered tools, training programs, and technical assistance.

MBZUAI said the institute will apply advanced AI research to practical agricultural services, including real-time advice on crops, pests, soil conditions, weather patterns, and markets. These systems aim to support better decision-making at the farm level while increasing resilience to climate change.

From open data to nationwide expansion

IAAI's efforts are structured around building open agricultural data infrastructure, developing deployable AI research, and supporting country-level implementation. The institute plans to create a centralized, open-access agricultural data corpus to support the secure training of AI models across regions and crops.

Research programs include multimodal diagnostic models for detecting crop diseases, voice-based advisory systems designed for local languages ​​and different literacy levels, and large-scale, place- and time-aware language models that integrate local and real-time data.

Alongside research, the IAAI Academy aims to train more than 200 experts from ministries, NGOs, and partner organizations to operate and scale AI-driven advisory systems.

For the EdTech and AI sectors, this announcement highlights how universities are increasingly positioning applied AI research alongside education, capacity building and public sector deployments. IAAAI's model combines open research, workforce training, and national pilots, reinforcing the AI-focused role of universities as infrastructure builders rather than pure academic institutions.

As governments and development agencies turn to AI for food security and climate resilience, MBZUAI's approach reflects an increased focus on applied learning, cross-sector collaboration, and AI systems designed for use in the real world rather than laboratory settings.
