ICT department considering AI utilization policy in government offices

Applications of AI

Faiz Ahmad Tayeb, Special Assistant to the Principal Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, said Bangladesh is working on a policy to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in government agencies.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the ‘Bangladesh Tech Connect Summit 2025’ held at a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday. The ICT department and technology giant Huawei jointly planned the event.

“Bangladesh started its digital transformation journey several years ago, but in recent months we have renewed our pace and direction,” Tayeb said.

“With support from our partners, we want to empower people through digital services,” he added.

He also said that the desired goals have not been achieved so far due to the lack of integration of digital transmission between government agencies and ministries. However, the transitional government is working on the integration of government agencies and the creation of a central monitoring cell for a smooth digital transition.

The program brought together key stakeholders to propel the country towards an innovation-driven digital economy.

Held under the theme “Building a Prosperous, Innovative and Inclusive Bangladesh through ICT Excellence”, the event served as a platform for policymakers, regulators, industry leaders and innovators to discuss how emerging technologies such as AI, 5G, cloud computing, IoT and fintech are fundamentally reshaping governance, business and daily life.

The TechConnect initiative featured several thematic sessions outlining Bangladesh’s strategic direction. Additional Secretary Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan presented a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the ICT sector, and GSMA Asia Pacific Regional Director Julian Gorman shared insights on bridging the digital divide across the region.

Mr. Md Abu Sayed, Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council, gave a presentation focusing on digital transformation of enterprises.

The main panel discussion moderated by ICT Secretary Shishu Haider Chowdhury was attended by Jason Wu, CEO of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Mobile Operator, Huawei South Asia Region and CEO of Huawei Bangladesh, who also attended the event. Discussions centered on strategies to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and accelerate technology adoption.

TechConnect 2025 is a continuation of the partnership forged between the ICT sector and Huawei, which signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2025 to expand cooperation in innovation, capacity building, and ICT ecosystem development.

The ICT department has been working with Huawei for over 10 years to build core digital infrastructure, including the implementation of Bangladesh’s first government cloud through the Huawei Cloud Stack platform. The department has also led cybersecurity reforms and expanded access to more than 100 public services through platforms such as MyGov.

Huawei, which has been operating in Bangladesh for 27 years, reaffirmed its commitment to support the national ambition of building a fully connected and intelligent Bangladesh through continued cooperation with government agencies, carriers, and enterprises.
