Last year, Google launched Vids, an AI-powered video editor, for Google Workspace productivity. However, it is available to a limited number of Google Workspace subscribers and AI plan subscribers. Currently, Google is deploying the basic version of the VIDS Editor at no additional cost. However, the catch is that the basic version will be available with AI features.
What does the free version include?
If you're just someone who wants to put together a simple video, a free plan should be enough. Google has access to pre-made templates, fonts, and its stock media libraries, so you don't have to start from scratch. You also get basic editing tools to cut, arrange and polish videos.
But here it is – most of the flashy AI features are not included. So you can create neat presentations and quick video projects, but you don't get the same level of automation that Google offers to paid users.
What do paid users get?
This is where things become more interesting. If you are using Workspace Business or Enterprise Plans, or subscribe to Google's AI Tier, you will see more options within VIDS. For example, you could also add an AI avatar to read the script. Interestingly, you can even change your voice and personality according to your needs.
If you have a video filled with filler words such as “um” or “so”, there are even automatic editing tools that will crop those words while avoiding manual work. Another useful tool is inter-image generation. This allows you to turn a single image into an 8-second animated video.
Apart from these, Google has teased upcoming features such as background noise removal, new effects, and more flexible video formats such as portraits and squares. But for now, these are still in the pipeline.
