Google's GeminiAI is more personalized by automatically remembering details

AI News

Google is deploying an update to Gemini, allowing AI chatbots to “remind” past conversations without prompting. When the settings are turned on, Gemini automatically remembers “important details and preferences” and uses them to personalize the output.

This will expand the updates Google introduced last year. This allows you to ask Gemini to “remember” your personal preferences and interests. Now, Gemini doesn't need to urge them to remember this information. As an example, if Google has used Gemini on the idea of a YouTube channel surrounding Japanese culture in the past, the AI chatbot may suggest creating content about trying Japanese cuisine if it asks to suggest new video ideas for the future.

When asked about the issue, Google spokesperson Elijah Lawal said Google was trying to improve its safeguards. “Our focus is building a personal AI assistant, and it's key to this for Gemini to learn what you like,” Lawal said. “Equally important is to provide simple controls to select the best experience for you, so you can always turn this feature on and off.”

Google will turn on this feature by default, but you can disable it by visiting the settings in the Gemini app and selecting it Personal context. From there, switch Past chat with Gemini option. Starting today, Google will be rolling out this feature to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model of “Select Countrys” and ultimately bringing it to more locations and Gemini 2.5 Flash models.

Google has also changed its privacy settings. In the upcoming weeks, Google will change the Gemini Apps Activity setting to Keep Activity. When this option is enabled, Google will use “samples” of files and use photo uploads for Gemini, which will “help to improve Google Services” from September 2nd, according to a blog post. Please note that this setting is off by default and that if Google has already disabled the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting, Keep Activity will also be off.

You can also save your privacy through Gemini's new “Temporary Chat” option. Temporary chats are not visible in recent chats or keep activity settings. Gemini also does not use these chats to personalize future conversations, nor does it use Google to train AI models. Google will only store these conversations for 72 hours. Temporary chats can help you “exploring personal questions” or to prevent you from looking at conversation details in future chats.
