VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh plans to leverage AI to improve newborn health care, with the state government launching a pilot project to automatically assess and record health indicators of newborns through smartphone-based video technology.
In a statement released on Saturday, Health Minister Y. Sathya Kumar Yadav announced that an AI-powered newborn health monitoring service will be integrated into a mobile application used by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA).
This technology allows important health parameters such as weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference, and arm measurements to be automatically recorded without physically touching the infant.
This initiative is being carried out in partnership with Wadhwani AI, which has developed the ‘Shishu Maapan’ application. Based on an agreement with the Ministry of Health, the application will be integrated with the existing ASHA mobile platform.
As part of the project, health authorities will use videos and measurements of 1,000 newborns to create an AI database. Data collection will be carried out in the areas covered by Indiranagar, Kopprao Colony, Kaza and Eravalem UHC as well as Pedavadrapudi PHC in Mangalagiri constituency.
