Professor Benjamin Rothman has been appointed as a prestigious Cifar Learning Fellow of the Machines & Brains Program.
The appointment of Rosman, founding director of the New Wits Machine Learning and Neural Discovery (Mind) Institute, follows the completion of the scholarship as one of the 18 early career researchers around the world selected by Cifar Azrieli Global Sholars for the 202-2024 program.

He can now continue his work Learning with Machine & Brain (LMB) Programs He joined world experts, including three “AI Godfarser” from the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research (CIFAR).
Rosman is a full professor at the School of Computer Science and runs the Institute of Robotics, Autonomous Intelligence and Learning (Rail) in Applied Mathematics at Wits University. In 2024 he became the founding director of The Wits Mind Institute, which focuses on the fundamental science of machine, human and animal intelligence. He is also a co-founder of both Deep Learning Indava and Relapa AI.
“It's a real big honor. The CIFARLMB program has had a huge impact on the development of AI, and is especially deep learning. I'm grateful to be part of this community,” says Rosman.
“LMB and Cifar are more commonly inspiration for the Mind Institute by focusing on basic issues and embraces of interdisciplinary nature.”
About CIFAR Programs in Machine and Brain Learning
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Studies (CIFAR) is a global research institute that explores the most pressing questions facing science and humanity.
CIFAR learning in the Machines & Brains program is based on neural and computer science and explores how the brain and artificial systems become intelligent through learning. The basic approach to the programme does not focus on short-term technological advances, but returns to the basic questions – has the dual advantage of improving the engineering of intelligent machines and leading to new insights into human intelligence.
