7 ways to waste money on AI video credits

As AI video tools now create clips for people to publish, AI video credits have become a real budget line. The tricky part is that for most services, it’s difficult to determine the cost per render until you’ve tried it several times.

Waste usually has more to do with when and how it’s rendered than with model corruption. These seven habits should be fixed first.

First, the numbers we are dealing with

Almost all generators now sell credits rather than minutes of video. Credits are consumed when rendering is performed, and consumption increases with length and resolution.

Let’s take a platform from a brand called Seedance 2.5 as a real-world example. ByteDance announced this model on June 23, 2026, but it remains in enterprise beta. The platform is currently selling credits for the available Seedance 2.0 family, with 2.5 expected to be released soon.

The pricing page provides enough information to make the calculations. The smallest pack costs $12.99 for 160 credits, which the provider describes as approximately eight 5-second clips at 480p. If you break this down, you get about 20 credits for each short low-resolution clip, or 8.1 cents per credit.

The second number is the one that moves the most, so leave it alone.

Save basic rendering logs during testing. Record the model, duration, solution, credits claimed, whether attempts are available, and reasons for failure. After 10 runs, the log will show the actual AI video cost per completed clip. The pricing page only shows the cost for one trial.

1. Payment of pack fee for regular work

Pack prices are by far the most expensive credits you can purchase.

At $12.99 for 160 credits, you’ll be paying about 8.1 cents per credit. The provider’s own best annual plans list credits at 2 cents each. This is approximately a 4x difference for identical renderings.

If you produce three videos a year, the pack makes sense. If you render weekly and continue to buy because you feel the commitment is safer, you’ll end up paying about 4x more per credit for that convenience. Before choosing a tier, count the successful and failed generations for the last month.

For larger scale, also compare subscriptions and pay-as-you-go API access. The AI ​​video generation API exposes per-model and per-call prices, making it easy to attach real costs to each job. Money is only saved if the workflow logs retries and failures rather than silently resubmitting them.

2. Let your credits expire

This is a pure loss and will always occur because expiration dates are not all the same.

For this service, Subscription Credits are valid for 30 days from the monthly award. One-time pack credits are valid for 45 days from purchase. Credits granted at sign-up or through daily check-in expire after just 7 days. Credits refunded after rendering failures do not expire.

Three clocks can run simultaneously.

  • Don’t buy big packs for unverified behavior. If a client is one month late, they may lose their credit.
  • Sign-up credits are treated as a one-week trial and not as part of your production budget.
  • A subscription is a monthly contract, not a savings account.

3. Testing at full resolution

This is the most expensive habit and results from impatience rather than ignorance.

I want to see the finished product, so my first try is to render at 4K for 30 seconds. The composition turned out to be wrong, the camera moved in the wrong direction, and you ended up spending many times more than the same discovery would have cost in 480p.

Framing, camera movement, pacing, and subject placement can be seen in short, low-resolution drafts. Resolution alone doesn’t tell you whether your shot will turn out well or not. Settle your shots cheaply and pay once for the final output.

4. Write adjectives instead of instructions

Words like premium, cinematic, aesthetic, and high-end convey little to the model. These are read as meaningful to humans and as noise to renderers.

5. Ignore reference input and pay to fix consistency

Reference input is one of the easiest ways to cut out failed generations, but many people still start with just text.

Seedance 2.0 accepts up to nine images, three video clips, and three audio clips, along with written instructions. Seedance 2.5 reportedly increases the total reference budget to 50, but ByteDance has not released any beta specs.

If you have 8 photos of the product and a color reference for its packaging, please provide them before the first rendering. That leaves less room for the model to invent another bag. Paying for four attempts to correct information you already have is avoidable waste.

ByteDance says the new model adheres approximately 20 percent to its written preparation. This number comes from the company itself, not independent testing, so treat it as a claim. Specifically, this means fewer takes are discarded.

6. Change three things at once.

The rendering is returned, which is close but wrong. This means you can rewrite the lighting, move the camera, and change the subject description all at once.

The next rendering is different. I have no idea which of the three changes made a difference. So if you’re still wrong, you’ll have to guess again and you’ll have paid twice for one piece of information.

Change one variable per trial. It may seem slow, but every time you render, you’ll know which instruction worked.

7. Publish without watching until the end

Credits are a small cost. Expensive mistakes are downstream.

The generated footage still fails in certain places. Hands do strange things. The text in the frame is returned in approximately the correct character format, which is clearly worse than wrong. The face may fluctuate slightly between 10 and 25 seconds. Everything looks fine at thumbnail size.

So before you go anywhere, watch the entire clip in full size. If there is a price, address, or company name on the screen, read it out loud. If a clip is 95% correct, but the remaining 5% misspells the brand name and plays in 4K for 30 minutes, that’s worse than no clip at all.

Please check the terms before use

The cheapest price for an AI video is not necessarily the lowest number on the page. Credit expiration, retry behavior, resolution multiplier, and failed generation refunds all change the cost of available clips.

Please save a copy of the current terms and price list before purchasing a large pack or annual plan. Find out about commercial use rights, watermark rules, retention of uploaded references, and what happens to credits after rendering fails. These details will determine whether the quoted price will stand up to the actual work.
