What inspired you to create Amplitude?
The idea for Amplitude came from a real failed startup attempt.when curtis [Liu, co-founder and CTO] I was building a text-to-speech app, Sonalight, and eventually realized it was too early for the market. But it wasn’t all in vain. While building Sonalight, we made an important discovery. Most companies had no idea how their customers were using their products. We were building a platform to visualize what features users liked about her Sonalight and where they were stuck. We found that the solution was actually more valuable than Sonalight itself. So we shut down Sonalight and focused all our attention on our solution, Amplitude.
Given the pandemic, global economic uncertainty, and challenges facing Silicon Valley, how tough have the past few years been for Amplitude?
From a business perspective, the pandemic has fueled the growth of digital products, but we are not immune to the current market. We are using this time to be cautious about leveling up all areas of our business, including executive leadership and his GTM execution. I am very confident in the opportunities ahead. The demand for digital analytics remains strong. We’ve only scratched the surface of this category.
What are your main responsibilities as CEO of Amplitude, and what are the biggest challenges you face?
As CEO, I am responsible for setting the strategic vision for the business, but I am also responsible for ensuring that we have the right management team in place. This means hiring leaders with the necessary skills and experience to take Amplitude to its next stage of growth. It’s part of my job that I love, but admittedly I wasn’t always good at it. Over the last year, the company has welcomed experienced executives including President Thomas Hansen, Chief Human Resources Officer KJ Johnson, CFO Chris Harms and Chief Revenue Officer Nate Crook. They have already made a huge impact in setting us up for success, not just this year, but for years to come.
How is artificial intelligence leveling the playing field for digital products? What does AI mean for the future of building products?
AI is about to completely transform product building and Amplitude couldn’t be more excited about it. The final big difficulty in the product development process is understanding what people want. Digital products have huge datasets to give you insight into what people want, but it takes a lot of time and analysis to go through the datasets, so really make the most of it. Not. Generative AI changes that. Users can now navigate complex workflows and gain self-service insights using a simple natural language interface.
As any business explores ways to harness AI, the key thing to remember is that it’s the data that matters most. It’s not about having the best machine learning models and algorithms. It will be about the unique dataset and the value it brings.
What do you love most about working at Amplitude?
At Amplitude, we get to work with so many great companies. We love hearing how Fender increased app conversions by 27% or how Le Monde used his Amplitude to increase online subscribers by 20%. The economic market is currently in a difficult situation. So one of my favorite things about leading Amplitude is seeing how we help our customers convert and increase revenue.
What are your professional goals for the next 12-18 months?
We want to continue helping companies around the world develop great products that drive growth. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our customers win. This means making her Amplitude even more accessible to all users, whether they are seasoned analytics veterans or first-time users. We know that companies that invest in their products now will build long-term durability and differentiation in their markets. We want to give you all the tools you need to see how your product investments support your business goals.
