The ROI of frontier AI models is currently a hot topic of debate in corporate America, primarily around the cost of computing. We did our best to understand what other dynamics were at play. That’s the question we asked the American people.

A poll conducted this week found that 34% of employees say their workload has increased since their company started using AI, with 10% saying it has increased significantly.

There are many factors that could be causing this. It is possible that AI has not yet produced meaningful productivity gains on an individual level, or that the time saved by AI is being used to complete more tasks. Perhaps your employees will take on more work if your team is smaller. Respondents said that the additional workload primarily comes from managing and checking AI output: reviewing drafts, finding errors, and redoing work where the model got it wrong. This is the unglamorous labor of quality control, which now seems to fall squarely on the shoulders of employees.

Interestingly, this is not a story of frustration or mistrust. Among workers who say their jobs have changed due to AI, 88% see the change as positive. Taken together, the data suggests that companies may be in an early training period, where the labor costs required to teach AI currently outweigh the costs saved by the technology. Additionally, employees seem to feel the trade-off is worth it.

As business leaders rush to adopt AI, they may need to consider how to reward employees for the extra effort that makes that transformation possible.
