Yahoo is rolling out new artificial intelligence capabilities for its email platform to better attract Gen Z and Millennials, one of the fastest-growing subsets of users.

The company said Thursday it would bring AI capabilities to its email service aimed at simplifying. The new Gameified “Catch Up” feature provides AI-powered summary and email previews, providing users with the option to “delete” or “keep in your inbox” This feature is the first of a series of changes that mark the biggest upgrade the email app has seen in a decade.

For many years, the company has struggled to innovate as competing platforms like Gmail provide easy-to-use interfaces. The company also estimated that it suffered a famous security breaches in 2013, which later hit users' trust, exposing all 3 billion people.

Yahoo's CEO Jim Lanzone joined in 2021 to rebuild the company, but in an email that he said in an interview “there is no doubt” he said it was one of its core products. “For years, people have abolished or predicted the death of email,” he said. “But it has a very consistent role in people's lives, both at home and at work.”

He said almost half of current Yahoo Mail users are Gen Z or Millennials, and one in three people currently use the service. Lanzone said AI will also play a major role in Yahoo's future, calling the technology “very important to almost every product we operate.”

“We want AI to work quietly in the background to simplify the tasks of all products, from search to email, to funding news, to finance,” he said. “We don't want to ask people to be involved, take extra steps, or learn new behavior.”

He also calls the brand “vintage.” In other words, he believes it sticks. “We're just starting out because we believe we can make a lot of innovation,” Lanzone said. “There's a lot more to the roadmap.”
