As always, the event will kick off with a keynote session where a host of exciting new developments are expected to be unveiled. This year, attention is focused on the announcement of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, as well as Apple's possible entry into the AI space with features that could power a range of products.
First up is iOS 18, touted as the most significant update in the history of the iPhone. The new operating system is expected to transform the user experience by integrating advanced artificial intelligence features. Rumor has it that AI photo retouching, voice memo transcription, and smart summaries of missed notifications will be among its key features.
Siri is also set to undergo a major overhaul and will incorporate a larger language model for more natural and personalized interactions. Additional features could include AI-generated custom emojis, suggested replies in Messages, auto-generated playlists in Apple Music, and more. Users will also enjoy a more customizable home screen with the option to create white space between app icons and change icon colors.
Like iOS 18, iPadOS 18 is expected to introduce similar AI enhancements and a more flexible Home screen. The update aims to improve multitasking, file management, and app organization, reinforcing iPad's role as a tool for productivity and creativity. Enhanced features in the Notes and Photos apps, along with improved Apple Pencil integration, will further position iPad as an essential device for both personal and professional use.
The next version of macOS, expected to be named macOS 15, will introduce AI capabilities to the MacBook lineup. Planned features include AI-assisted writing in Pages, automated slide deck creation in Keynote, and code suggestions in Xcode. These AI tools are designed to streamline tasks and improve user efficiency. Continuing Apple's tradition of naming its versions of macOS after California landmarks, possible names for this version include Redwood, Sequoia, and Mammoth. The update will also enhance built-in apps like Notes, Mail, Photos, and Fitness, bringing them on par with their iOS counterparts.
For Apple Watch users, watchOS 11 is likely to bring advanced health and fitness features. Although few details have been revealed, the update is expected to enhance the Fitness app with AI-driven metrics and personalized workout suggestions. Other improvements include improved sleep tracking, stress management tools, and more comprehensive health data analysis. These updates will strengthen Apple Watch's position as the premier device for health monitoring and fitness tracking.
visionOS 2 is also coming in the area of augmented reality and virtual reality. The upgrade is expected to bring advanced AR capabilities, a better user interface and performance enhancements to Apple Vision Pro headsets. Developers can look forward to new tools and frameworks designed to create immersive AR/VR experiences and push the boundaries of what these technologies can achieve.
Despite the flurry of software updates, WWDC 2024 may see very few hardware announcements, especially since Mark Gurman says Apple has no plans to unveil any new devices at this year's WWDC event.
