Several leading researchers from Windsurf CEO and AI Coding Assistant Startup are heading to Google.
A Google spokesperson confirmed in a statement from Business Insider that Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan and others will join the Deepmind team as part of their continued investment “in advanced capabilities for developers.”
“We look forward to welcoming top AI coding talents, from the Windsurf team to Google Deepmind, to working with agent coding,” a Google spokesman said. “We are excited to bring the benefits of Gemini to software developers everywhere.”
Douglas Chen, co-founder of Mohan and Windsurf, said in a statement to Bi that the pair are “thrilled to join Google Deepmind along with some of the Windsurf team.”
“We are proud of what Windsurf has built over the past four years and are excited to see them move forward with a world-class team and kickstart the next phase,” continued the statement from Mohan and Chen.
On Friday, Verge first reported that Windsurf's $3 billion interim deal with Openai was off the table.
Business Insider previously reported that the possibility of Windsurf rolling up to Openai, the direct competitor of Microsoft's co-pilot, had kept tensions between Openai and Microsoft. Microsoft is Openai's biggest investor.
The Openai representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
