A range of stakeholders attended the launch of FIFPRO Player IQ Tech Experience Tour in Tel Aviv, Israel – From players unions and legal representatives to organizations such as IBM and FIFA. The event highlighted the need for professional soccer players to have more control over how their data is collected and used in employment contexts.
Also present was David Murphy, Deputy Chairman of the Irish Data Protection Commission. The Irish Data Protection Commission recently took strong action against large multinational technology companies for data privacy breaches within the EU single market.
Murphy said it was “eye-opening” to see how closely professional soccer players are being monitored when it comes to data collection.
“In terms of the amount of data collected and the application of AI and new technologies, I personally could not assess it, but on behalf of the data protection authority, it is important to us. I think it’s about understanding what’s going on in different areas and applying that to our own thinking about the application of data protection law.”
