Amidst the challenges of Apple's AI, some are calling on the company to immerse themselves in huge bank accounts and make flashy AI acquisitions. This is why the lack of acquisitions could indicate something important about Apple's current AI progress.
Apple is “open” to acquire AI, but there are no signs of a major purchase
It's been a big week for AI, but there are major new launches from companies like Openai and Anthropic.
Meanwhile, the discourse surrounding Apple's AI efforts is in a bad mood.
Last week, the company posted quarterly revenues better than Wall Street had hoped for. Nevertheless, investors seemed far more interested in the hardships of Apple's AI.
CEO Tim Cook tried to ease concerns by suggesting increased AI investment and openness to acquisitions.
“We're making a huge increase in investment,” Cook said of AI. “We're embedding it all across devices, across platforms, and across the company.”
Cook said Apple has acquired “about seven” so far this year, but nothing “massy in terms of dollar value.”
“We're embracing M&As that accelerate our roadmap,” Cook said.
Despite its openness to Apple's acquisition, there is no indication that a deal for the blockbuster is ongoing.
Is Apple planning to buy a major AI company? perhaps. However, the lack of materialization of such AI acquisitions could say a lot about the company's confidence in internal progress.
Behind the scenes at Apple, AI advances may be better than they look
Apple has a secret and well-known reputation. We don't usually talk about unreleased products.
As a result, all we can gather about Apple's internal AI efforts is what the company is telling us and what is leaking.
- In the typical way, there's virtually nothing Apple is telling us. It's just a predicted assertion that it is progressing.
- However, Leak doesn't draw the most encouraging pictures. In addition to the famous departure from the Foundation Models team, a massive executive shakeup for SIRI leadership has sparked concerns.
Apple's AI efforts may be a real problem.
But if things are as bad as they show up, a flashy, expensive AI acquisition would be a clear fix.
Apple has money. Wall Street will probably be excited. Users will benefit from better AI features.
Why doesn't Apple win someone?
There are many potential reasons. But perhaps the best: I'm sure there's no need for executives.
Tim Cook, Craig Federigi and other Apple leadership all know how important AI is. They also know how things get better internally than anyone else.
I might be overly optimistic, but I think the lack of a major AI acquisition might be a sign that Apple is confident in current progress.
In a typical way, you may not be able to see the fruits of that progress until iOS 26.4 the next spring. But even if competitors surge in new innovations, Apple's ecosystem lock-in should buy time to catch up.
