Andrew Tullock: Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta is poached to attract top-level AI researchers and experts from companies in sectors around the world, including Openai, Microsoft and Rising AI startups. According to several reports, Meta is joining Meta's super intelligence team, offering up to $100 million incredible payments to these coveted experts.
One such person whose name makes the headlines is Andrew Tullock, but for a completely different reason.
Tulloch made the headline by turning down an offer of about $1 billion and a nine-figure salary. In India, it is unusual for someone to turn down a nine-figure salary if a six-figure salary is considered a dream job.
Who is Andrew Tullock?
Andrew Tulloch is a machine learning expert at Thinking Machines Lab, an AI company led by Mira Murati, and aims to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence beyond chatbots.
He recently made a headline after the Wall Street Journal reported that it had turned down an astounding nine-figure offer from Meta. The Journal noted that it is rare for someone to leave such a deal, even in Silicon Valley, where large pay is common.
Sources familiar with the issue say the $1.5 billion offer includes bonuses and stock-based rewards, making the decision even more surprising.
Before this, he played an important role in the development of GPT-4O and GPT-4.5 during his time at Openai, where he worked on large-scale ML systems and O-series reasoning.
Tulloch spent over 11 years as a prominent engineer in Meta, where he focused on machine learning systems and worked extensively with Pytorch. He began his career at Goldman Sachs, developing financial and trading strategies.
Academically, Tullock received his Masters degree in Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning from Cambridge University, where he won the Distinguishment and University Award. He also graduated with first class honors and university medals at Sydney University in Advanced Mathematics.
Meta hires AI genius Alexandre Wan to lead Meta's super intelligence lab
The co-founder of Alexandr Wang was hired by Meta to lead Meta's Superintelligence team and was given the title of Head of AI. His appointment followed Meta's investment in scale AI, which valued the data label startup at $29 billion.
