Snapchat is trying to give a new meaning to the “chat” part of its name.
Snap, the company behind Snapchat, announced Wednesday that its customizable My AI chatbot is now accessible to all users within the app. Powered by the viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, the feature was previously only available to his paying Snapchat+ subscribers.
According to the company, the tool can provide recommendations, answer questions, help users plan, and write a haiku in seconds. You can talk to your friends by mentioning them with “@MyAI”. Users can even design a custom Bitmoji avatar with a name to further personalize it.
The move comes more than a month after OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, opened up access to its chatbots to third-party businesses. Snap, Instacart, and her Quizlet, a tutoring app, are among his early partners trying to add ChatGPT.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has wowed many users with its excellent ability to generate original essays, stories and lyrics upon user prompts. The initial wave of attention to this tool helped restart an arms race among technology companies to develop and deploy similar AI tools in their products.

Adding ChatGPT functionality can also come with some risks. Trained on vast amounts of online data, this tool can spread inaccurate information and can respond to users in ways they deem inappropriate.
In a blog post on Wednesday, Snap admitted, “My AI is far from perfect, but we’ve made a lot of progress.”
For example, about 99.5% of My AI responses say they comply with our Community Guidelines. Snap said it made changes that “help protect against inappropriate or potentially harmful responses.” The company also said it added moderation technology and included new features in its in-app parental tools.
“We look forward to your feedback as we continue to use these early learnings to make AI a safer, more enjoyable, and more useful experience,” the company said.
