What I’m reading today: “AI‑Ready Doctor” by Dr. Ahmed Khalid Abdulhamid
British dentist and researcher Dr. Amed Khalid Abdulhamid explores the ethical and practical aspects of integrating artificial intelligence into clinical practice in his book, AI‑Ready Doctor: Re Thinking Clinical Judgment, Responsibility, and Trust in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
This book explores how medical algorithms support clinical practice, emphasizing that AI acts as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for clinical judgment. We also discuss the evolving role of physicians as interpreters and decision makers of algorithm-driven analytics, highlighting the ethical boundaries of AI integration and the risks of over-reliance and cognitive decline in medical practice.
Dr. Abdulhamid is a Visiting Professor of Medical AI Ethics at the University of East London and has written several works on AI in healthcare in both Arabic and English.
He told Arab News that the next big challenge in the healthcare sector is to ensure the responsible use of AI technology that preserves the role of doctors and healthcare workers in providing quality patient care.
Dr. Abdulhamid has lived in Saudi Arabia for 25 years and has observed the Kingdom’s growing role as a global hub for digital health and AI innovation, supported by an ethical and regulatory framework based on Vision 2030, led by the Saudi Data and AI Authority.
