Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is proving to be a transformative force in our economy and society. The rapid developments of recent months have underscored the critical role of AI as the underlying infrastructure in which the digital world evolves and reinforce the need to ensure its responsible and ethical use.

Generative AI rapidly synthesizes vast amounts of information to produce diverse content across different media, blending human-like creativity with technology. This emerging field offers many possibilities to revolutionize work across industries, automating tasks, fostering creativity, improving decision-making, and providing humans with the tools to drive progress.

At the same time, however, challenges range from ethical considerations and notions of fairness, to deeper debates about intelligence, to the fear of reaching a technological singularity, a hypothetical future where technology spirals out of control. has been filed. It poses potential risks such as job loss, malicious exploitation, inconsistency with human values, ownership and intellectual property rights, open and closed models, innovation and safety balance, multilingual It raises issues such as tension between models and sovereign state language models. , more. An immediate concern is that it could lead to an unequal distribution of opportunities and resources, exacerbating the digital divide.

These uncertainties highlight the urgency to build robust AI governance frameworks to ensure responsible and beneficial outcomes for all. An AI governance strategy should assess opportunities and risks and suggest ways forward to strike a delicate balance between exploiting the potential of generative AI and protecting ethical considerations. As technology advances and continues to expand in scope, it becomes imperative that its development and deployment be firmly aligned with human-centered principles to drive social progress everywhere.

International bodies such as the United Nations, OECD, G7 Hiroshima AI Process, G20 AI Portal, and the EU-US Joint Trade and Technology Council have put forward proposals on ethical principles, transparency, and security in the development and deployment of AI technologies. Countries are also exploring regulatory approaches, ranging from industry-led self-regulation to formal governance models. These efforts are promising, but they are not enough. Global public-private collaboration is needed to address the rapid speed and increasing scope of generative AI development.

In response, the World Economic Forum launched the AI Governance Alliance, which brings together industry leaders, governments, academic institutions and civil society organizations to advocate for the responsible global design and release of transparent and inclusive AI systems. launched.

This effort builds on existing frameworks and incorporates preliminary recommendations from the Responsible AI Leadership: Global Summit on Generative AI hosted by the World Economic Forum in April.

The AI Governance Alliance builds on the World Economic Forum’s 50+ years of expertise in establishing multi-stakeholder partnerships. Integrate private sector knowledge, public sector governance mechanisms, and civil society goals to address the transformative nature of generative AI systems.

With the support of the World Economic Forum’s Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR), the alliance will actively engage with different regions to develop a global approach to addressing the transformative nature of generative AI systems. contributes to its formation.

The Alliance’s mission reinforces three fundamental actions that must be taken to ensure responsible and secure AI development and deployment.

First, we must prioritize secure systems and technology, investing resources in robust and secure AI systems to ensure user safety and risk mitigation. This includes technical aspects such as establishing common terminology, benchmarking, traceability, implementing responsible practices throughout development and deployment, and ensuring robust evaluation methodologies.

Second, we need to ensure sustainable application and transformation, align generative AI with long-term societal goals, address bias, and promote transparency. It is imperative that business and government leaders have the knowledge and foresight necessary to effectively and responsibly harness the power of generative AI within their organizations while mitigating the risks associated with it. .

Third, strong governance and regulation are key. The alliance will work with policymakers and stakeholders to establish ethical frameworks and regulatory measures specific to generative AI. Aiming to anticipate potential risks, guide development and ensure a globally harmonized understanding of responsible AI practices, this includes assessing societal impacts, promoting equity and inclusion, Includes co-designing critical governance blueprints.

To ensure that innovation grows and realizes the benefits of AI while minimizing risk, we need to come together. Generative AI can be a force for good, empowering individuals and moving society forward, if it steers the right path today by bringing together diverse insights and sound strategies.
