Artificial intelligence (AI) is making an amazing difference in the field of education. A Turkish student is reportedly facing prison time for using a homemade AI device to cheat on his university entrance exam. Reuters reports that the student was caught using the device while taking the national basic aptitude test at a school in the southwestern province of Isparta. What police said about the device
The video, shared on X and made public by police, shows the student using a camera disguised as a shirt button, connecting to the AI software via a router hidden in the bottom of his shoe.
Turkish police involved in the arrests said the homemade device was somewhat complicated, incorporating a button camera that an AI system could use to view the test questions.
The audio is then passed to a voice agent on the user's phone and transmitted to an earpiece worn by the student. In the video, a police officer also scans the questions and explains how the system works.
According to the report, the student was observed behaving suspiciously during an exam, after which he was detained by police, formally arrested and sent to prison pending trial.
A second student assisting the student was also detained, according to the report, but the report did not say to what extent the student was involved or what punishment he might face.
Using AI to Cheate on Exams
This is not the first case of AI being used to cheat on school assignments. Over the past few years, there have been numerous concerns about AI, including the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, being used to cheat on homework, tests, and other assignments.
However, what makes this case notable is that it marked one of the first times that someone using a homemade AI device was arrested and a user faced judicial punishment for such actions.
ChatGPT is good enough to pass law school and business school exams, so it wouldn't be surprising to see someone try to use it to gain an advantage.
