The Warwick company aims to revolutionise workplace health and safety by using the power of AI to predict potential accidents and prevent them before they happen.
Based at Warwick Innovation Centre, part of the University of Warwick Science Park, Raiven helps its customers understand, develop and deploy AI-based solutions to improve their business, rather than companies going it alone and making mistakes.
The business was founded in March 2023 by data scientist Tom Ormsby, who realised that many businesses were unsure of how to most effectively use AI.
With the support of Business Ready, Raiven has won a major grant from Innovate UK to take on the ‘SaferAI’ project.
The project brings together a consortium of organisations, including OctaiPipe, Digital Catapult and a leading consumer goods manufacturer, to create a model that can predict the risk of health and safety incidents.
This allows organizations to contribute to training a shared AI solution while maintaining data security and privacy between each other.
Tom said: “Being part of the SaferAI project is fantastic news for the growth of our business.
“Our AI solutions can be used to improve almost any aspect of a business, but they make a real difference to worker safety and productivity by enabling companies to identify where accidents are likely to occur before they happen.
“In theory, many companies could pool data such as accident reports and near misses to create an AI-based solution, but there is a risk that this data could be made public.
“The method we use is called ‘federated learning’ and it allows us to collect data from different sources but not move it around, keeping individual company data secure.
“This method could help reduce accidents in the workplace, but federated learning could be a way to develop further AI models for many other purposes.”
“I'm really excited.”
Raiven Limited has opened its first office at Warwick Innovation Centre as part of the science park's Ignite incubation programme.
After recognizing the company’s potential, Dirk Schaefer, head of the Ignite program, began mentoring Tom in the Business Ready program.
He said: “Tom and the team at Raiven Limited had fantastic expertise in supporting businesses through AI solutions, but we needed their input into our growth plans so that we could attract additional business outside of SaferAI projects.
“I’ve provided advice to ensure their plans are focused on what they can offer their customers and how best to target them, and helped them build their network through initiatives such as the Ignite Alumni Network.
“We think Raiven can achieve great things in the ever-changing world of AI, and we're pleased that they've been named a lead contributor to the SaferAI project, which should help them land even more work.”
Councillor Ella Billiardo, Warwick District Council's member for arts and economy added: “We are proud to support the Business Ready programme through our donation to the county's community fund, UKSPF, to help innovative organisations like Raven develop and grow their businesses.”
“We are thrilled to hear that Raiven has successfully developed an AI solution in such an important and fast-growing region, particularly the Warwick area, where they have access to great resources and a rich talent pool.”
