Warning about fraudsters' use of AI

Applications of AI

People have been warned to be wary of scammers using AI to make their scams seem more believable.

Local trading standards officials said the rise of deepfake videos and other content was raising concerns.

Councillor Victoria Wilson, Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for trading standards, said:

“We've all seen great advances in AI in recent years, but unfortunately we are now seeing more and more criminals using AI to deceive people.

“Our trading standards team is seeing common types of scams but is concerned because AI is making them more convincing and harder to spot, which means it's important to know what to look out for and stay one step ahead of fraudsters.”

“If you think you have been a victim of fraud then call your bank immediately using the number on the back of your bank card and report it to Action Fraud or call the police on 101.”

According to the Trading Standards Office, voice cloning is also being used by scammers to trick people through WhatsApp message scams and other such schemes.

Advice on spotting and reporting scams is available on the Citizens Advice Consumer Service website.
