Walmart replaces top leadership team as “AI will rapidly reshape retail”

As retail giant Walmart leans heavily toward AI, its management team is undergoing a major change.

The company announced Friday that four executives will move into new leadership roles when incoming CEO John Furner takes over on February 1st.

“These internal promotions reflect our opportunity-focused culture and depth of leadership,” Furner said in a statement.

Collectively, these names have supported some of Walmart’s most significant growth strategies in recent years, as the company moves beyond traditional brick-and-mortar retail and into the era of e-commerce and agent shopping.

David Guggina, who will succeed Mr. Farner as head of Walmart’s U.S. division, has spent nearly eight years with the company in positions ranging from automation to supply chain to e-commerce. He previously worked at Amazon for nine years.

Seth Dallaire, Walmart’s U.S. chief growth officer, is expanding his role in leading global growth. Dallaire has been with Walmart for four years and previously served as Instacart’s chief revenue officer and Amazon’s vice president of advertising sales.

Elsewhere within the organization, Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas will take over Walmart’s international division following the departure of international CEO Cass McRae. Mr. Nicholas previously served as Chief Financial Officer of the International Division.

US Chief Merchandising Officer Latrice Watkins will join Nicholas in his role as head of the Warehouse Club chain. Watkins began working as an intern at Walmart in 1997.

“These leadership changes are also an important step in how we organize for the future,” Furner said in a statement. “As AI rapidly reshapes retail, we are centralizing our platform to accelerate sharing capabilities and enable our sales force to be more focused and closer to our customers and members.”
