Volvo EX60 accelerates in-vehicle connectivity and AI

AI News

The all-electric Volvo EX60 has been described as a “natural conversation car,” and just days before its global reveal, the manufacturer announced that it is the first car designed to launch with the Google Gemini AI assistant and continuous, “ultra-responsive” connectivity provided by Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform.

The EX60 model is considered the most intelligent Volvo and can travel up to 810km on a single charge in all-wheel drive configuration, outpacing recently revealed competitors and further than any Volvo electric car before it. With a 400kW fast charger, the EX60 can get up to 340km of range in just 10 minutes.

It includes the latest version of HuginCore, the manufacturer’s core system that enables the car to think, process and act. The system includes an in-house developed electrical architecture, core computer, zone controllers, and software within the EX60, making it a “true software-defined car.”

Named after a bird from Norse mythology, HuginCore is designed to enable continuous improvement of Volvo cars through over-the-air updates, reinforcing the company’s long-established reputation as a safety leader in the automotive market. In fact, HuginCore is believed to be responsible for taking the EX60’s safety to a new level, as it constantly reads and assesses the car’s surroundings through a series of sensors. The result is a car that can clearly and accurately understand its surroundings, Volvo said.

The technology is built to help drivers anticipate hazards sooner, avoid potential risks, and react calmly and confidently when unexpected events occur. The car is designed to make every journey safer, more secure and less stressful, with advanced driver assistance features. The car also continues to improve over time, drawing on the experience of other Volvo cars around the world, including accidents and near-misses.

Volvo believes HuginCore embodies a human-centered approach to technology, combining in-house development and collaboration with technology leaders.

“The new EX60 is packed with human-centered technology designed to improve the driver’s driving life,” commented Anders Böll, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “HuginCore, our state-of-the-art hardware and software system, combines technology developed in-house with the best services and technologies from technology leaders like Google, Nvidia, and Qualcomm Technologies. It creates discreet but cutting-edge technology that works quietly in the background to support users.”

At the heart of the EX60 is the Nvidia Drive platform, featuring accelerated computing with the Nvidia Drive AGX Orin system-on-chip (SoC) running on the safety-certified DriveOS operating system. The EX60’s AI-powered features require advanced computing power available from the next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit SoC, giving the EX60 the highest level of processing power ever installed in a Volvo. The EX60 is capable of over 250 trillion operations per second, and connectivity options include 4 years of free unlimited data.

Volvo Cars and Google have been working together for nearly a decade, and Gemini’s features are designed to give you hands-free control of everything that matters on the road. Highly personalized and deeply integrated with the vehicle, it allows drivers to manage complex tasks through natural, multi-turn conversations without having to remember specific commands. This allows drivers to stay focused on driving and reduces the need to look at the central display.
