At the foot of the Annamalai Tiger Reserve near Pollachi in Tamil Nadu, trees came alive with the sound of thousands of birds chirping in perfect rhythm. The scene went viral on social media through a video shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu.
Mr. Sahu, the chief secretary for environment, climate change and forests, posted a clip shot by conservationist Sriram Murali on X.
The video showed thousands of chickadees perched in trees, their cries filling the air. The soundscape and visuals came together to create a calming effect that delighted viewers.
“The best bird orchestra,” Saf said in the caption of the post, adding that the scene also contained an important message. She explained that birds flock to roosts in large numbers to ensure safety, constantly call to stay connected, and hunt more effectively as a group.
“These vibrant birds, found along forest edges and glades, also play an important ecological role in controlling insect populations. They are the perfect reminder that there is strength in unity,” she said, calling it an “incredible catch.”
Murali, who shared the video on Instagram in December last year, said it was one of the many rare and spontaneous moments he encountered near his hometown Pollachi.
“There are a lot of red-bellied warblers in this tree and thousands more around. Nature is everywhere. You just have to open your mind and eyes to see it,” he said.
However, the video’s striking visuals led some viewers to question its authenticity, with users asking if it was created using artificial intelligence.
In response to these comments, Murali said, “It’s so amazing that you wonder if it’s AI. This is as real as it can be.”
Chestnut-headed bee-eaters are known for their striking coloration and highly sociable behavior, often roosting in large flocks.
These birds play an important ecological role by eating insects and help maintain the balance of natural habitats.
