TL;DR

Earlier this month, while checking out Google’s work on some new collage template options for Google Photos, I discovered another feature in the works, even more mysterious. It’s code name is “Saba”. The icons we found associated with Soba seemed to hint that this was some kind of AI-powered video feature, but at the time there wasn’t really anything else to do. Soba isn’t ready for public release yet, but it looks like we’ve already reached the details of what’s planned.

Last year, Google launched two new AI tools for photos: Photo to Video Converter and Photo Remix. And now, when we look at some of the new text strings present in version 7.80.0.929302933 of Google Photos for Android, it suddenly becomes clear what Saba is up to: a remix for video.

Remix your videos It’s still too early to see it in action or preview much of the tool’s developing UI, but we can finally see a button labeled “Video Remix.”

Even without a feature preview, this text alone tells you a fair amount about what to expect. The tool appears to offer “cinematic relighting, immersive background replacement, and beautiful stylization of your videos.”
As with Photo Remix, the processing happens in the cloud, so you’ll need to back up your clips with Google to use them. You’ll also notice that there are usage limits on the number of videos you can generate, and paid Google AI accounts have even higher limits.
Some of the tips discussed here provide a little insight into other limitations, such as minimum video clip lengths and suggestions for avoiding starting with overly shaky videos. Very crowded scenes may not work well, and Google recommends focusing on just two or three subjects.
It’s also not yet clear exactly what video generation model Google is using for Video Remix. Veo is a possibility, but the new Gemini Omni also seems like a perfect fit. Even though it all works out in the end, we’re already very excited to get a chance to actually see this in action and what it can do. If we’re lucky, we might be able to show you how it goes in the near future.
