stockholm, February 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Ericsson today announced the successful completion of the world’s first 6G over-the-air (OTA) session, marking a major milestone towards commercial 6G networks and strengthening U.S. leadership in next-generation wireless innovation.
This milestone was achieved with pre-standard 6G systems using AI and a trusted end-to-end architecture designed to be cloud-native. The OTA session will be conducted at Ericsson’s US headquarters in Plano, Texas, to validate the readiness of key 6G components. The demo will feature radio hardware, RAN computing, software defined air interfaces, and cloud platforms. Ericsson’s future-proof software architecture can be deployed on multiple hardware platforms, including CPUs (Central Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).
This achievement supports the U.S. government’s commitment to 6G leadership, including early research, global standards, and forward-looking spectrum policy. 6G is critical infrastructure for national security, economic competitiveness, and AI-driven innovation. Ericsson’s research directly supports these priorities by demonstrating how future networks can provide secure, high-performance, AI-native connectivity that supports America’s economic competitiveness, innovation, and national security.
“Ericsson’s 6G demonstration is an important milestone in the next generation of wireless innovation made possible by American ingenuity,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. “The Trump Administration will always support our trusted partners, and we remain committed to a future of cutting-edge connectivity designed and operated by the United States.”
“6G will be fundamental to how artificial intelligence will be extended throughout society and will be critical to America’s national security, economic prosperity and global competitiveness,” said Berger Ekholm, President and CEO of Ericsson. “Completing the world’s first live 6G trial in the U.S. is concrete proof that advanced wireless innovation, manufacturing and research is here to stay, supporting America’s leadership in next-generation connectivity. We will continue to lead in innovation with the U.S. ecosystem, working with government, partners, carriers, businesses, academia and startups.”
why is this important
Specifically, the 6G trial proves two key capabilities to prepare future networks for AI. One is to power AI robotics with instant, reliable connectivity and processing for real-time control. Enables real-time video streaming. As AI expands beyond smartphones to power robotics, autonomous systems, immersive applications, and industrial automation, wireless infrastructure is becoming a critical layer of the AI stack. 6G networks are designed to sense, compute, and adapt in real-time, enabling consistently low latency, higher uplink capacity, and new classes of AI services not currently possible.
Ericsson’s OTA milestone signals the transition of these capabilities to system-level reality, positioning the U.S. ecosystem to shape global standards, drive innovation, and lead the commercialization of 6G.
A long-term commitment to the United States
Ericsson has been operating in the United States for more than 120 years and continues to expand its footprint across research, manufacturing and operations. The company has more than 6,000 employees nationwide and operates 12 research and development centers focused on AI. ASIC Design and antenna system. Our U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas, serves as a primary hub for advanced wireless research and development, standards development, and customer engagement.
Ericsson currently manufactures advanced 5G radios and RAN computing systems at the 5G USA Smart Factory in Lewisville, Texas, one of the most advanced communications manufacturing facilities in the country. Ericsson has invested more than $150 million in the factory and is the only manufacturer manufacturing communications equipment at scale in the United States. The highly automated 300,000 square foot facility supports more than 550 U.S. manufacturing businesses and strengthens a secure and resilient domestic supply chain. As 6G technology matures, Ericsson plans to build on this US-based manufacturing base to support future deployments.
Technical highlights
The demonstration leveraged Ericsson radios, baseband platforms, and cloud-native software, strengthening the company’s ongoing contributions to global standards organizations such as 3GPP and Open RAN. Ericsson will expand trials across additional spectrum bands, enable AI-native capabilities, and work with carriers, chipset partners and the broader ecosystem to accelerate 6G readiness.
