Access to this tool can be requested through the University’s IT Services Catalog and can be accessed without sharing University data to train the tool. ChatGPT Edu also offers university-wide security features, making it safer than your personal account.
“We have been steadily building the foundation for responsible AI across campus, and ChatGPT Edu represents a major step forward,” said Manish Parashar, chief AI officer at the University of Utah. “Universities are at the forefront of reimagining how we teach, learn, and research in the era of generative AI. ChatGPT Edu helps us maintain an edge. We’re excited that our community can use this tool in a way that’s safe, academically optimized, and aligned with our values.”
ChatGPT Edu can be used for all university operations that do not involve sensitive or restricted data. Hospital and clinic staff have not yet been given permission to use the tool, but the university is conducting a separate evaluation for its use in these settings.
The University of Utah requires all students, faculty, and staff to use ChatGPT Edu instead of using personal accounts to get the most out of the tool while meeting the University’s usage guidelines.
The university has also partnered with OpenAI to provide virtual training on using the tool. OpenAI has trained more than 100 individuals this year and plans to provide additional training in January.
This news comes on the heels of the University of Utah launching “Utah 360,” which integrates multiple campus apps into one platform for students, employees, and alumni. Utah 360 is a combination of a traditional sports app, a general campus app, a ticketing system, and an alumni portal. The app is personalized to each user’s needs and interests.
