The university ranks in the world's top 10 in five subjects and ranks top in Canada in 28 subjects, more than any other school.
The University of Toronto is ranked 3rd in the world for Artificial Intelligence in ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's 2025 World Academic Subject Rankings, and ranks among the world's top 10 universities in four additional subjects.
One of two new subjects added to this year's annual rankings, U of T's achievements in AI highlight the university's leadership in developing potentially revolutionary technologies. This includes basic research by university professor emeritus and 2024 Nobel Prize winner Jeffrey Hinton, widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” and his graduate students.
In addition, the University of Tennessee ranked fifth in the world in biomedical engineering, sixth in public health, eighth in statistics, and ninth in human biology, ranking in the top 25 in 21 subjects, making it one of the most widely ranked universities in the world.

It was also named the top university in Canada in 28 subjects, the highest total in the country.

The Shanghai Subject Rankings are attracting attention as an international benchmark for research performance across disciplines, and approximately 2,000 universities from approximately 100 countries and regions are evaluated every year. Each subject is evaluated using nine indicators, including number of published articles, international collaboration, journal quality, citation impact, and major academic honors.
Ranked in the top 30 universities in the world
In addition to AI, another new theme has been added to this year's rankings. Robot science and technology. In this field, U of T was ranked 31st in the world.
The ShanghaiRanking consultancy has ranked a total of 57 subject areas for 2025, with U of T in the top 50 in 31 of them. Only five universities ranked higher in more subjects: Harvard University, National University of Singapore, Stanford University, Tsinghua University, and Zhejiang University.
Compared to last year's rankings, U of T's rankings increased in 18 subjects, decreased in 24 subjects, and remained unchanged in six subjects. Earlier this year, U of T was ranked 25th in the world in the 2025 edition of ShanghaiRanking's comprehensive ranking of world universities.
Overall, U of T ranks in five of the most closely watched international rankings (QS World University Rankings, US News & World Report Best Global University, Times of Higher Education World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's World University Academic Rankings, and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.
