
The University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have opened applications for a new joint master’s program in data science and artificial intelligence. This is the first educational partnership between IIT and the Russell Group Universities in the UK.
Successful applicants study in Birmingham and Chennai and are awarded a single degree from both universities. They also give you the opportunity to carry out substantive research projects and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.
The joint program will be conducted on both university campuses and will award a single degree certificate through mutual recognition of credits issued by each university. The program offers students the flexibility to spend 5 or 12 months in the UK and finish the program in Birmingham or Chennai.
The program starts in July when students start their studies at IIT Madras, complete some modules and then start short-term industrial employment.
Students can choose between two different study programs
- Studied in the UK for 12 months after completing a research project in Birmingham
- You will study in the UK for 5 months and then return to IIT Madras to complete your program and conduct a research project at IIT Madras.
This partnership offers competitive overall fees for students charged with the UK study element at the domestic fee level, rather than the usual international level. We are currently accepting applications.

The establishment of a joint master’s program was agreed upon by Prof. Adam Tickel, who visited Chennai in November 2022, and Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. The two professors signed a joint letter of intent to explore a wide range of research areas, including: Data Science, Energy Systems, Biomedical Engineering. The agreement further builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2022, in which the two institutions expressed their intention to further develop their partnership.
