Unity rolls out game-ready AI in open beta

Unity Technologies, an American video game software developer, recently introduced an open beta of its artificial intelligence (AI) tools for developers using Unity 6.

The new product, known as Unity AI, is an important step in the company’s efforts to embed AI directly into game development workflows. Unity AI is centered around an in-editor assistant designed to understand the structure and context of your game project.

According to Unity, the system is built to work within the editor, allowing developers to automate repetitive tasks while maintaining control over creative decisions. At the core of this release is the Agent Assistant, which includes features such as a planning mode to help transform early-stage ideas into structured development plans, and a modular “skills” system tailored to specific aspects of game creation, such as user interface design and scene creation.

Unity said in a community post that the assistant can also identify bottlenecks and provide optimization suggestions by analyzing profiler data. The beta version includes tools that can generate placeholder materials, audio, cubemaps, and both 2D and 3D assets. Developers can also build scenes using image references or import design files from platforms like Figma. The assistant can convert this into a functional user interface (UI) layout.

In addition to our in-house tools, Unity allows developers to connect to third-party AI services through what we call AI Gateways. The company has also introduced a model context protocol server, allowing developers to control the editor from external integrated development environments (IDEs) and other large-scale language model (LLM) applications.
