It looks like Apple has finally decided to use OpenAI's technology to power the AI features of iOS 18, the software update for iPhones that will be announced at next month's WWDC 2024 event. The news is confirmed in a new report by Bloomberg's Mark Gernman, who says the deal with OpenAI could be a major part of WWDC.
Bloomberg reports that Apple is in contract negotiations with Google to offer Gemini as an alternative. Notably, Apple's massive user base will make it one of the biggest players in AI once the new feature rolls out in iOS 18.
Additionally, the move to continue with OpenAI as a partner for AI features in iOS 18 will give the company an advantage over Samsung, which relies solely on Google's Gemini AI to power some of the advanced features in its Galaxy S24 series.
Garnman said the new features will first be available as previews in the developer beta of iOS 18, and the company could release a stable version of these features with the iPhone 16 in September.
How do Apple's AI features differ from Samsung's and Google's?
Apple is expected to announce several AI features at its WWDC event in June, including features like note transcription, photo enhancements, faster searches, and upgrades to Siri.
Beyond iOS 18, Garnman reports that Apple may also introduce AI features to macOS and iPadOS, all of which will feature software that decides whether certain tasks should be performed on-device or via the cloud.
Using “on-device” AI has some obvious advantages, such as improved privacy, ability to run offline or in places with poor internet connectivity, faster response times, etc. However, on-device Large Scale Language Models (LLMs) are often not as powerful or knowledgeable because they are not backed by huge servers with billions of parameters (as most commercial chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, have).
Maintaining a privacy-focused image may become tricky, as Apple may also use cloud-based LLM for AI features in iOS 18. To mitigate this issue, Gurnman said Apple will likely emphasize that it doesn't build profiles of users, as Google and Meta do.
