Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, said the UAE has been selected to join the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group, along with 49 other countries.
“In this momentous step towards progress, the UAE shines as a symbol of innovation and cooperation, embracing the endless possibilities of technology and innovation,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He further added, “The UAE is charting a course for a future defined by excellence, progress and leadership on the world stage, underpinned by a vision without limits,” adding that the UAE is the only Arab nation , also mentioned that it is the only “regional state”. announced that he will be joining his AI Safety and Security Group.
Other countries in this group include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, and Spain.
Established during the 49th G7 Summit in Japan last May, the Hiroshima AI Process Initiative provides a comprehensive framework for responsibly pursuing advances in AI while rapidly evolving. It was announced in hopes of curbing potential problems posed by technology.
According to a code of conduct recently posted by the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group, organizations in the AI field are encouraged to follow a variety of behaviors throughout the process of AI development.
The code of conduct states: “When designing and implementing test preparation, the organization undertakes to pay attention to the following risks, as appropriate.”
“Risks from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear; including how advanced AI systems lower barriers to entry such as weapons development, design acquisition, and use by non-state actors.” [AI] A model that can make copies of itself, or “self-replicate”, or train other models. ”
The group said its code of conduct would be updated regularly in ongoing meetings and consultations with member states and other organizations.
This international framework is one of several efforts underway globally to create standards and highlight the potential dangers of AI.
In October, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak hosted an AI summit attended by a range of world leaders and experts, and as a result, the potential disastrous effects of AI technology, whether intentional or unintentional, were raised. The Bletchley Declaration was released, endorsing proposals to tackle the damage caused by the pandemic.
The UAE has sought to become a leader in AI development and regulatory frameworks in recent years.
In 2019, long before AI momentum began to build, the UAE opened one of the world's first higher education institutions dedicated to AI, the Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.
Last year, months after OpenAI's ChatGPT became the center of the AI world, the company's CEO Sam Altman visited the UAE and highlighted the central role the Middle East and North Africa play in developing secure AI. He expressed his optimism that we can achieve this goal. The UAE was “talking about AI before it was cool”.
Altman also spoke with Al-Olama on the sidelines of the 2024 World Government Summit in Dubai, and said the UAE is “well positioned to take the lead” in the debate over AI safeguards and audits. ” he said.
