U.S. Air Force secretary and 2023 Wash100 winner Frank Kendall has asked the military’s scientific advisory board to explore potential military applications for generative artificial intelligence, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbots. , Breaking Defense reported on Thursday.
Kendall said he has ordered the advisory board to form a small team to “review generative AI techniques like ChatGPT and think about their military applications.”
He also directed the creation of a more permanent AI-focused group to explore ways to introduce emerging technologies into military operations as quickly as possible.
According to Kendall, ChatGPT and other generative AI currently have limited military applications.
“I’m looking for it, and you’re looking for it, right? But what’s it like to let ChatGPT create a document for you? [It] It’s not reliable in terms of the veracity of what it produces,” Kendall said.
“There is still a way to go before we can rely on such tools, for example, to carry out operational orders,” he added.
