Twitter has announced from its community notes Twitter handle that it is testing a new feature called Notes on Media to combat the proliferation of AI-generated images and manipulated videos. The announcement comes at a time when generative AI is rapidly expanding and there are concerns that it could lead to the proliferation of defaced media on the web.
“From AI-generated images to manipulated videos, we often encounter misleading media. Today we are piloting a feature that gives contributors superpowers : Media Notes Notes attached to images will automatically appear on recent and future matching images,” the company wrote in a tweet.
The feature currently targets tweets containing a single image, but Twitter plans to extend it to videos and tweets containing multiple images and videos. Twitter says community notes can provide valuable context not just for a single tweet, but for any tweet containing the same medium. Similar to behavior in Tweets, in-image notes provide additional context, such as whether the image is misleading or AI-generated.
Today, this feature allows users with a Writing Impact Score of 10 or higher to provide independent notes about the media found within the Tweet, rather than focusing solely on the Tweet itself. This feature is designed to give contributors the option to provide helpful context and additional information on its own, regardless of the specific Tweet the note is attached to.

“If you tag a note as ‘About an image’, the note will appear on all Tweets that the system identifies as containing the same image. These notes, when deemed helpful, accumulate views from all Tweets that include them, but only count as his one write and rate impact on the author and rater. When someone rates a media note, that rating is associated with the Tweet in which the note was posted. This will allow community notes to identify cases where the note may not apply to a particular tweet,” he said on Twitter.
