There is a new tool available to packaging and processing professionals in the form of artificial intelligence (AI). One question is how to use it.
This is according to PMMI Business Intelligence's 2024 report, Transforming Packaging and Processing Operations, which summarizes industry executives' reactions at the 2024 Top to Top Summit. Participants said that most projects are in the early stages, often in the research and planning stages.
When asked whether they use or plan to use AI within their work, most respondents answered yes. Projects range from initial research to the implementation of various AI systems across several different departments.
More than a third of respondents do not currently use AI, and many plan to learn more about AI in the future and would like to learn more about it. But some remain skeptical. One respondent said, “We are currently developing corporate policies to govern the use of AI on work and/or work computers.”
Another participant explained, “I still need to figure out how to apply.” [AI] Ensure information security. ”
AI is often not used in manufacturing operations, but is used in other departments for tasks such as customer service and support, marketing, sales for business intelligence, and human resources to create job descriptions. . Many companies using AI are leveraging AI for production demand, planning, and forecasting, and some respondents are using AI for data processing and analysis.
Uses of AI on the factory floor include automation of repetitive tasks, machine vision and quality control, predictive maintenance, remote service and monitoring, and inventory management.
“We actively use AI as a co-pilot in roles that involve repetitive and intensive data processing and analysis,” said one respondent.
Potential AI applications in packaging and processing
Packaging and processing professionals are finding countless applications for AI, and as respondents noted, success tends to snowball. As AI projects prove successful, some companies have begun plans to expand the use of AI beyond its original use.
“We are now leveraging AI and data analytics for vibration analysis,” one respondent explained. “We will leverage AI to help reliability engineering teams transition to prescriptive maintenance in the future.”
One respondent who is already using machine vision AI said, “We are working with various solution providers to help us implement these types of tools to optimize our supply chain and address energy efficiency issues.” “But it's still at a very experimental level.”
When asked about potential future uses for AI technology, the Top to Top session had the following responses:
