Tomra Food has announced a 4C optical sorting machine designed to improve detection, accuracy, performance, efficiency and flexibility for the nuts and individual Quick Freeze (IQF) industry.
The company says 4C is the first Tomra machine to allow Packers and processors to run multiple forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in parallel with Lukai's deep learning and traditional machine learning. These two technologies are said to provide “unparalleled adaptability” and new opportunities for performance in food sorting operations when used together, allowing customers to adapt to changing operational needs and unlock consistency when changing products or sorts.
Apparently, they can also help increase detection of defects in foreign materials and products and color, ensuring an increase in food safety and consistency across batches and shifts due to the use and output of optimized resources. The Tomra 4C is pre-configured and ready to be integrated into a new or existing line.
“The Tomra 4C delivers serious performance improvements with the ability to achieve a false rejection rate of less than 1% (<1% for nuts, <0.5% for IQF), which is possible thanks to the excellence of engineering combined with the latest generation of AI-powered processing and pulsed LED sensors.
In March, the company introduced AI-based technology to upgrade the alchemical scrap, designed for use by aluminum scrap processors and recyclers, and produce high purity fractions, GainNext. New techniques recover cast low alloys from alchemical casting fractions and reduce alloying elements such as silicon.
