When you post something on the Internet, you cede some control to the people who find it. Photos, videos, text, and audio recordings: All of this content can be downloaded or screenshotted and reused by other users in any way they want. That’s the risk of posting online.
The problem is, you may not expect the platform you’re posting on to go out of its way to allow other users to reuse your content. But that’s exactly what TikTok is doing now with its new AI “Remix” feature.
What is TikTok’s AI “Remix”?
AI Remix is intended to be a kind of meme creation tool. According to CNET, Remix will allow TikTok users to create custom images generated from their content, with the help of AI, of course. For example, if you post a video of your morning coffee routine, viewers can use a remix to generate an image of them drinking coffee and include the text, “This is what your first sip of the morning looks like,” or other content. People seem to be sharing this new AI image in video comments as another way to increase engagement on the platform.
TikTok remix is currently being tested
It’s important to note that remixes are not an official feature of TikTok at this time. TikTok confirmed to CNET that AI Remix is currently an experimental feature and is being trialled on a limited basis. There are no clear plans to roll this out further, and TikTok has said that the way remixes work may change by the time the full version is released.
I’m sure some users are creative enough to use remixes to generate funny AI memes, but I have major privacy concerns. Creators may not want to subject their likeness to TikTok’s AI Factory, since allowing content to be used in remixes essentially means giving permission to use your face or video to train the company’s AI models. The good news is that TikTok lets you opt out of remixes. The bad news is that you can’t opt out in bulk. Instead, the app forces you to disable remixing for every video you post. The company seems to think it will allow remixes on some videos and not others, when in fact many creators would like to block remixes altogether.
What do you think so far?
How to opt out of TikTok’s AI remixes
TikTok is only trialling AI remixes for a limited number of users, so there’s no need for everyone to worry about this yet. Still, if you post videos to TikTok, it’s worth checking your settings to make sure this feature isn’t enabled (assuming you opt out, of course).
To do this, tap on one of your TikTok videos and tap on the three dots in the bottom right corner. Scroll down and select Privacy Settings. If you are participating in a trial version,[AI によるコンテンツのリミックスを許可する]will be shown to be enabled. Tap to turn off the option.
