Artificial intelligence (AI) is once again proving its power by reshaping the digital content ecosystem in unprecedented ways. Recent revelations have highlighted that AI-generated content is no longer an experimental trend, but a lucrative business model. In a surprising development, a YouTube channel in India has reportedly made over Rs 38 million in revenue within a year using only AI-generated videos. This success story highlights how advanced AI tools are lowering the barrier to entry for content creation while enabling massive global reach. With minimal resources and no traditional production setup, AI-driven channels are now competing with and even outperforming traditional digital creators.
According to a global survey conducted by video editing platform Kapwing, Indian YouTube channels “Bandar Apna Dost” has emerged as the most-watched AI-generated content channel in the world. The channel only uploads videos created using artificial intelligence and has achieved impressive numbers. To date, it has been viewed 2.07 billion times and has gained over 2.76 million subscribers. Kapwing's research analyzed more than 15,000 popular YouTube channels from around the world, and the results are particularly significant. Among the completely AI-generated channels, 'Bandar Apna Dost' ranked top in terms of viewership and engagement.
The content strategy for 'Bandar Apna Dost' revolves around short AI-generated video clips featuring animated monkey characters. These videos don't require actors, filming locations, or high-end production staff. Despite the absence of traditional creative processes, the content has managed to captivate audiences around the world. The study estimates the channel's annual revenue to be around Rs 38 million, highlighting how low-cost AI-driven production can generate huge financial returns. This achievement is seen as a powerful example of how AI can serve as an effective and scalable tool for digital creators.
The study also revealed a growing preference for AI-generated content within YouTube's recommendation system. AI-generated videos are rapidly gaining influence on platforms. Approximately 20% of videos recommended to new users fall into a category known as “AI slop.” This refers to content that is created entirely by AI, with minimal or no human creativity. This trend is even more pronounced with YouTube Shorts, where nearly 33% of the first 500 Shorts shown to new users are generated by AI, indicating a major shift in content consumption patterns.
